Kira Zalan is an associate editor at U.S. News and World Report and a freelance journalist. She has written about Civil War ships, kidnappings in Mexico, beaches in Bermuda, hunger strikes in Washington, D.C., mail-order brides from Ukraine, and terrorists in Pakistan. Her photos have been published by The Scene and Washingtonian magazines and by the Center for Public Integrity. She received a Master of Professional Studies degree in journalism from Georgetown University in 2010 and a Master of Science degree in Russian and post-Soviet studies from the London School of Economics. Kira lives in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
